A year on and community continues to be more important than ever. So this season, as a branch of our Community Connection campaign, we’re celebrating and putting the spotlight on creative talents, artists and inspiring individuals, from the US and Europe. As part of this content series, we will be sharing their stories, talents, passions and give a behind the scenes look into their industry and life, forming our French Connection community of creators, #FCCreators. So without further ado, let us introduce you to our April Creator of the Month -Ashley Marah, a nutrition & wellness coach and social media consultant.
How did you start your journey in holistic nutrition?
My passion for health and wellness began over a decade ago when I was just 12 years old. At that pivotal time, I realized that nutrition was so much more than the food on my plate. As a dancer, there was a lot of pressure around my physical form, but given how young I was, I didn’t quite understand what was right for my body at the time. After many years of trial and error, I transitioned into eating vegetarian and eventually completely vegan once I graduated high school. It’s been over 7 years now, and this decision has completely shifted the way that I nourish my body and mind. Now, after becoming certified in holistic nutrition, I offer one-on-one nutrition and wellness coaching for individuals who are interested in building a sustainable, balanced lifestyle.
Besides wellness coaching, you also offer social media consulting. Tell us more about this side of your business and how you manage to do both.
After transitioning to fully plant-based, I began experiencing a plethora of improvements in my health. My energy levels were up, my immunity was strengthening, my skin was clearing up, etc. I felt pulled to share these benefits with whoever would listen, especially since I knew how many women were struggling with similar challenges. I began my Instagram in the fall of 2014 during my first year of university to simply document the recipes that I was creating and it began to catch on with friends and strangers alike. As a result, I accidentally stumbled into the world of wellness bloggers and influencers and realized it was such a wonderful opportunity to share my message through this platform. After years of creating content personally and professionally, I gained a lot of insight on how the industry works. Enter: my social media consulting business. I help individuals and brands alike grow their social presence through content creation, strategy, and more. This has enabled me to weave my passion for health + social media together.
What do you wear to feel like your best self?
I feel the most comfortable in my skin when I’m wearing a summer dress. Growing up in Florida, it was essential to wear light clothing, and it naturally became my favorite piece to wear. Whether it’s neutral, floral, midi, maxi….I just love how effortless yet put together it can be.
Do you have your own self-care ritual?
As someone in the wellness world for over 7 years, I’ve had a lot of time to experiment with routines that work best for me and my lifestyle. I incorporate bits of self-care throughout my day that support me in feeling grounded despite the ebbs and flows of life. I enjoy carving out time to make nourishing food, exercising for 20-30 minutes, being creative in some way, getting fresh air whether it’s popping up to the roof or walking along the water, and spending time chatting with loved ones. Connection has become more important than ever, especially during this past year.
Your approach to wellness coaching is individualistic, however, are there universal tips you can offer to those on a path to a healthier lifestyle?
Absolutely! I always encourage my clients to focus on the ‘why’ behind making shifts to a healthier lifestyle. Establishing a root reason, such as finding peace with one’s body or disrupting toxic thought patterns, will help keep you on the path to your wellness goals. Instead of changing everything overnight, take small, feasible steps such as swapping out snacks with more nourishing options or working out for 10-15 minutes. Focusing on what you’re gaining, rather than what you’re losing, is essential to maintaining a balanced mindset when it comes to making changes in routine.
You’re also sharing a special recipe for our community - what inspired this particular smoothie?
This signature green smoothie has become a staple in my morning routine. The combination of mango, banana, pineapple, spinach, peanut butter, ginger, and turmeric is so delicious, nourishing, and satisfying. It’s simple, quick, and always hits the spot.
- 1 banana
- 1 cup of frozen mango
- 1 cup of frozen pineapple
- 1 cup of frozen spinach
- 1 tbsp peanut or almond butter
- 1/2 inch of fresh ginger
- 1 tsp of turmeric powder
- roughly 2.5 cups of water (add more if the consistency is too thick for your preference)
Blend all ingredients until smooth!
*Hot tip: Always place spinach (or any greens) closest to the blade to ensure it’s fully blended.
